Sleep when your mind will not settle

A kind, practical guide for anxious nights, racing thoughts and building a wind-down that does not demand perfection.

When you are tired and anxious, bedtime can start to feel like a test. The more you try to force sleep, the more awake you may feel. That is a difficult loop, and it is not your fault.

Give the night less to fight with

Instead of aiming to make yourself sleep, aim for a quieter resting space. Dim the lights. Put the clock out of sight if checking it makes you tense. Choose a simple, repeatable cue such as a warm drink, a familiar podcast at low volume, or a few pages of an easy book.

When thoughts are racing

Thoughts often sound louder in a quiet room. You could write a few words on paper: what is worrying you, one next step for tomorrow, and one thing that can wait. This does not solve the worry. It can signal that you do not have to hold it all in your head tonight.

If you wake in the night

Try not to treat being awake as an emergency. Keep the room low-lit. Notice something neutral, like the feeling of the blanket or the sound of your breath. If you are becoming more frustrated, a calm activity outside the bed for a short while may help you return when sleepy.

A realistic routine

Consistency can help, but a perfect routine is not required. Small changes are more likely to last: a regular wake time most days, daylight in the morning, and less stimulation near bedtime where possible.

If sleep problems continue, affect your daily life, or come with low mood, trauma symptoms or health concerns, speak with a clinician. There may be support that fits.

When to get professional help

If these experiences are affecting your safety, daily life, relationships or sleep, consider talking with a GP, therapist or another qualified professional. You deserve support that fits your situation.
