PTSD and trauma: a gentle starting point

Trauma-informed information about protective responses, coping at your pace and finding support without pressure.

Trauma can affect people in many ways. Some people have strong reactions soon after a difficult event. Others notice changes later, or do not connect their reactions to what they have lived through. There is no single correct response.

Protective responses are not personal failures

After overwhelming experiences, the nervous system may stay alert for danger. You might notice unwanted memories, avoidance, sleep problems, strong emotions, numbness or being easily startled. These can be protective responses, not signs that you are broken.

Only a qualified professional can assess PTSD. This page cannot tell you whether that label fits. It can offer a place to begin understanding what you are noticing.

Start with the present moment

If thinking about the past feels too much, it is okay not to push. Choose something concrete in the present: press your feet into the floor, look around the room, hold a warm drink, or name the date and where you are. Small reminders of the present can help the body recognise that this moment is different.

Go at your own pace

You do not have to tell your story all at once. A trauma-informed professional will aim to build safety, choice and trust. You can ask how they work, what you can expect, and whether you can pause whenever needed.

Support matters

Sharing a little with someone safe can reduce isolation. If that is not available, a GP, therapist or specialist support service can help you consider next steps. If you are in immediate danger or feel unable to stay safe, use emergency or crisis support.

When to get professional help

If these experiences are affecting your safety, daily life, relationships or sleep, consider talking with a GP, therapist or another qualified professional. You deserve support that fits your situation.
